Dream House Wish List

You can use this worksheet to help you construct your own wish list and record the key items on your checklist in their descending order of importance.

When you have filled in all the answers that apply to your dream house on this worksheet, read them over then use the Dream House Priorities Worksheet to prioritize your dream home’s features.

City, Suburb or Neighborhood

 


 What is your ideal neighborhood?

 
 

 


 What are your preferred school districts?

 
 

 


 Do you want to live close to your children' s future school? Within walking distance? How far exactly?

 
 

 


 How far from work do you want to be?

 
 

 


 Does the community have a shopping district? Is there a mall? Is that important?

 
 

 


 Is safety important? What kind of crime statistics should your new neighborhood have?

 
 

 


 Do you want a neighborhood that has a mixture of young and old people? Do you want a place where nearly everyone is the same age and has children?

 
 

 


 What kinds of services do you want in your neighborhood (dry cleaners, Laundromat, grocery stores, superstores, etc.)?

 
 

 


 What kinds of services do you want near you (gift store, bookstore, children's clothing, outdoor equipment, major shopping mall)?

 
 

 


 How many miles do you want to be from these services? Stores? House of Worship? Family and friends?

 
 

 


 Are there any clubs nearby that you already belong to or would want to join?

 
 

 


 How do you plan to get to work? If you will take public transportation, do you want to be within walking distance of the bus?

 
 

 


 How far from the airport (or shuttle service) do you want to be?

 
 

 

Building Exterior

 


 Do you prefer a single-family, condominium, or rural setting?

 
 

 


 What style of house do you prefer? Colonial? Farmhouse? Contemporary? Ranch? Victorian?

 
 

 


 Cape Cod? Should it have one story or two?

 
 

 


 Do you prefer brick, stone, aluminum or vinyl siding, or stucco as an exterior?

 
 

 


 Do you want a bright house with a lot of windows?

 
 

 


 Should the house have a north, south, east, or west exposure?

 
 

 


 Do you want a lot of land? A big or small yard? Wooded or sunny area?

 
 

 


 Do you want a pool? Tennis court? Other recreational amenity?

 
 

 


 What kind of parking accommodations do you want (indoor, outdoor, covered or uncovered, parking for guests)? Do you prefer an attached garage? For how many cars?

 
 

 


 Do you want to have a deck? A Patio? A sundeck?

 
 

 

Building Interior

 


 What kind of condition should the house be in? Would you prefer a fixer-upper or gut job? Or do you want a house that is in move-in condition?

 
 

 


 How many bedrooms would you like to have?

 
 

 


 How any bathrooms?

 
 

 


 Do you want a great room? Family room? Game room? Media room? Home Office? Library? Den? Billiard Room?

 
 

 


 Do you want all these rooms separate from or attached to the kitchen? Attached to any other room?

 
 

 


 Do you want a separate guest room with private bath, which might later house an aging parent?

 
 

 


 Do you want a fireplace? Wood burning or gas? In more than one room?

 
 

 


 Would you prefer an attic that could later be built out for later expansion?

 
 

 


 Do you want a full or partial basement? One that is build-out or build-able?

 
 

 


 What kind of closets and storage should the home have?

 
 

 


 What kind of appliances would you like?

 
 

 


 Do you prefer hardwoods, tile or carpet?

 
 

 


 What kind of bathroom and kitchen finishes do you prefer?

 
 

 


 Will you have the cash to make the decorating changes after you purchase the home, or should you find something you can live with for a few years?

 
 

 

Mechanicals

 


 Do you want central air and central heat?

 
 

 


 Do you prefer electric or gas heat?

 
 

 


 Should the rooms all have ceiling fans?

 
 

 


 Do you prefer a slab foundation, crawl space or basement (if terrain permits)?

 
 

 

Condominiums and Co-ops

 


 If you prefer a co-op, do you want a small, medium or large development?

 
 

 


 What kind security system do you prefer? Gated community? Guard? Electronic locking system?

 
 

 


 What percent of the owners should also live there? Should it be primarily owner occupied, with some rentals?

 
 

 


 Do you prefer neighbors who move frequently or who live there for a long time?

 
 

 


 What kind of amenities would you like? Pool? Tennis courts? Exercise facility? Storage lockers? Party Room? Sun deck? Backyard? Place for a barbecue?
