Tips
Before Leaving Present Address:
- Decide
what to move and what not to move. Possibly plan a garage sale.
- Get
estimates from several moving companies.
- Arrange
for reading of gas, electric and water meters and inform utility
companies where to send final bills.
- Notify
your children's school about the move. Get letter covering their
status.
- Have
refrigerator and other major appliances serviced for the move.
- Get
medical records including immunizations, prescriptions, dental X-rays,
eyeglass prescriptions, etc.
- Notify
pastor of your church that you are leaving.
- Secure
permission to move any installment purchases.
- Have
your present bank arrange credit references for establishing new
accounts in the new city.
- Arrange
insurance on household and personal possessions for "in
transit" coverage.
- Check
with your attorney about your will if moving to another state.
- Close
out local charge accounts.
- Secure
forwarding address cards from post office and send to magazines,
insurance companies, credit card companies, relatives, friends and
past employer to receive W-2 forms.
- Notify
utility companies in new city. Inquire about fees and deposits.
- Cancel
phone, milk, lawn service, trash pickup, water softener, newspaper
deliveries and all home services.
- Contact
credit bureau for transfer of credit files.
- Gather
valuables to take with you personally. Have art and antiques
appraised.
- Arrange
sufficient cash for moving services and travel.
- Plan
travel itinerary and make travel and lodging reservations in advance.
- Pack
an arrival kit of necessities just in case you arrive before the
mover.
- Draw
up a floor plan of where furniture should be placed at your new
location, to help avoid confusion for you and your mover.
- Transfer
checking and savings accounts.
- Have
car fully serviced for the trip.
- Leave
keys for your old house with Realtor.
- Keep
records of expenses incurred during house hunting trips and receipts
for moving expenses for tax purposes.
- Save
the phone book from your former city for tying up loose ends and for
future correspondence.
At Your New Address:
- Obtain
cashier's check for closing real estate transaction.
- Secure
homeowner's insurance policy.
- Check
on utility company services, deposits or waivers.
- Have
all appliances, heating and air conditioning checked.
- Check
with post office for mail being held.
- Have
address on driver's license changed.
- Register
for voting.
- Register
car in new state within 5 days.
- Register
children in school.
- Register
family in new place of worship.
- Arrange
all home services: trash pickup, newspaper, lawn care, water softener,
etc.
